Dorit Koppel
Class description
A native Israeli, Dorit Koppel first studied and performed with internationally renowned Bat-Dor and Bat-Sheva companies of Israel. She received a M.F.A. in Dance from NYU Graduate School of the Performing Arts, after completing a B.A. in Dance at Sarah Lawrence College. Dorit was the artistic director and owner of Progressive Dance Studio in Englewood, NJ, where she developed a ballet training program for children, teens and adults.
Acclaimed as "Teacher of the Year" by Dance Pages Magazine, Dorit classically trained students who now dance with New York City Ballet, Boston Ballet and other leading companies. She coached Kioko Ina of the USA Ice Skating team in Monsey, NY, and also developed the team's ballet program.
Dorit danced with the Wendy Osserman Dance company throughout the U.S., participated in workshops and summer residencies led by Jose Limon Company and Alvin Ailey, and has choreographed and appeared in a wide range of works in ballet and contemporary dance. Dorit is a member of the ballet faculty for Manhattan Youth Ballet (formerly Studio Maestro) and guest teaches throughout the United States.
Dorit's class is designed for the beginner who has the basic knowledge of ballet and the ability to do a full and simple barre. Class begins at the barre, covering all the fundamental exercises. From the barre the class moves to the center, where the movement phrases are aimed to develop balance and coordination. Center work is designed to excite the dancers and to move them through space, while encouraging them to maintain correct classical technique, clarity and utmost sensitivity to the music. Dorit's goal is to teach an inspiring, colorful classical ballet class, which allows each student's physicality and personality to shine through. The class is suited for students who come from diverse and non-dance backgrounds.
